London Calling is the first novel in the London Romance series by Clare Lydon. This is a great way to kick off the series, but each book could be read as a stand-alone. The book finds Jess discovering her girlfriend is cheating on her and she takes it as a sign to make the move back to her hometown of London and say goodbye to Australia. She's not sure how she wants to reinvent herself once she has moved in with her friend Kate, but she is looking for a change. That change comes in the form of a busy morning/midday cafe and a cute and very interesting eye doctor named Lucy. Once they do become a couple, Jess's ex-girlfriend shows up which throws a wrench in the plan and Lucy is ready to call it a day, but come on, this is a romance! I won't give it away, but there is hope for Jess and Lucy. I thought it was a lovely romance of the nature that soothes my soul when I want two very likable women to fall in love, have a few sexy scenes, get torn apart by some type of misunderstanding and then reunite for a happily ever after...maybe. Ms. Lydon delivers every step of the way so I was not disappointed.I enjoyed this author's writing style. It seemed effortless and the characters are well drawn and have just enough idiosyncrasies to make them clearly distinguishable and relatable. Ms. Lydon's wit is on point 100% of the time and I found myself chuckling out loud from time to time. This little example is what you can expect throughout: "We were now into the advanced stages of frottage and if they ever do make it into an Olympic sport, I hope to be able to represent my country with honor."Along with Jess and Lucy, you get to know Jess's roommate Kate who shows up in the second book in the series. She has a very special relationship with Jess because not only are they roommates, but they are family as well...family as in that Jess's sister is married to Kate's brother. The entire family dynamic is fun to watch.The pros? Its a really good book and it makes for a perfect lay about your apartment and read while it rains activity. As it never rains here, it makes for a perfect lounge around the pool sipping diet coke reading experience. And, of course, everything sounds wittier and sexier with a British accent.The cons? If you pick it up, you probably won't put it down until you finish it.I recommend this book and all the other books in this series. You won't be disappointed. I tried to get into this book. I really did. But this book dragged. Not only was the writing style repetitive. But so were the actions. Jess kept going out for drinks with people and... Honestly were we supposed to like her? I certainly didn't. The editing was also lacking. Whoever the author hired as a copy editor really needs to bone up on their punctuation for both dependent and independent clauses, I'm just saying...The cover is super cute and why I bought the book.But because I couldn't bear to keep reading it, this getsTwo stars.
